Beef and Tomato Stew

Tomato Bredie – Stew with a hint of Beef – LOL

Tomato Bredie is a South African type of stew made from mutton, in my household we do the beef thing. Being Afrikaans we call it Bredie and you will call it stew.  Nearly every household I know grew up knowing their version of Tomato Bredie. I also have to confess that a glass of milk goes well with this dish if you suffer from heartburn.  A perfect dish in the Winter months, though I would eat it every season.  You can use any kind of meat you prefer.  Next time I want to try Chicken and then serving it with grilled vegetables and salad.  Enjoy cooking this and it is so easy to prepare.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons Veg oil,  –  1kg Soft Shin Beef cubed,  –  2 Large Onions chopped,  –  1 teaspoon Salt,        3 Liter Beef Stock,  –  Pepper to taste,  –  2 tablespoons chopped Thyme,  –  5 Large Potatoes cubed,      3 tablespoons Worcester sauce,  –  2 tablespoons Sugar,  1 cup Tomato Puree

  • In a pot of your choice heat the oil over medium heat and add the meat.  Brown the meat for about five minutes and then add the onions.  Keep on stirring for a minute or two then add the Salt and Beef Stock.
  • Keep on the heat with lid on for about 90 minutes or until meat is soft.  (Do keep an eye on it, if the liquid seems to be to little just add some water a bit at a time until meat is cooked thoroughly).
  • Add the Pepper, Thyme, Potatoes, Worcester sauce and Sugar.  Keep on the heat until Potatoes is soft and tender, add the Tomato and cook for another 5 minutes.

Serve nice hot with Rice or Mash.  I just love taking a piece of bread, buttered and left to absorb all the leftover sauce in my plate – that’ my dessert.

I am a mother of two, wife to an amazing husband, travel freak, homemade cook. In my free time, I always decorate something, read books, or do gardening. My favorite coffee spot is any coffee spot as long as it is at an airport. I just love airports.
