Me and Leon enjoying our first cocktail in Cancun, Mexico

When travelling from South Africa to the southern part of North America you tend to place Mexico last on your bucket list.  First we flew to Sao Paulo, from there we had to fly to Mexico City and then flew to Cancun.  It was the longest time I have ever spent in the air, to and back.  Oh boy did I enjoy it there. I would go back anytime and do not mind the flights and  waiting in departure lounges.

Its different from back home, but so are every country unique in its own way. There’s the chili-spiced cuisine that made Leon down his Tequila Sunrise and my Pina Colada at once, mistaking those small red pickled chiles in a jar.  Some of my well-travelled top experiences and stories is from this country.  First time ever snorkeling at Isla Mujeres, walking amongst iguanas, crawling to our room full of tequila and so many more.

Distance travelling in Mexico can be huge and especially when planning to travel on public transport, be ready for long journeys.  Eating in Mexico is not the same as eating in a Mexican restaurant anywhere else in the world.

What to eat?

The food is spicy, but different from what we are used to like the Chilli Con Carne or the Nachos.  Bugs are also a huge delicacy in Mexico and you will find some restaurants serving cocopahes (deep fried cockroasches), chicatanas (flying ants) and escamoles (ant larvae). It is also home to chocolate, chili’s and maize.  Try grilled chicken with a chocolate and chili sauce, its fabulous. Mexicans are in some way quite formal, so please address them as senor or senora.

About three-quarters are Roman Catholic and most are also quite religious.  The craft trade is still very strong, so you will end up buying some craft from locals as memorabilia to take home.

Welcoming us to Mexico

I am a mother of two, wife to an amazing husband, travel freak, homemade cook. In my free time, I always decorate something, read books, or do gardening. My favorite coffee spot is any coffee spot as long as it is at an airport. I just love airports.
